Spacecraft Sees Spectacular Solar Eclipse on Moon

There was a solar eclipse earlier this month — but it wasn’t visible anywhere on Earth.

Rather, a Japanese space probe in orbit around the moon got spectacular high-definition video of the sun being blocked — by the Earth, producing an otherworldly “diamond-ring” eclipse.

It may be only the third time such an eclipse has been viewed by terrestrials, human or otherwise.

[An American lunar lander got a blurry snapshot of a solar eclipse in 1967,
and two years later Apollo 12 astronauts got treated to the same thing on
their way back from the  moon.]

The Kaguya, or Selene, probe was traveling from the dark to the light side of the moon on Feb. 9.

The sun rose over the moon’s surface, as usual, but on Feb. 9 it was just a thin ring surrounding darkness.

(The Earth’s disk is a bit smaller than the sun’s when viewed from the moon; on Earth, the moon just about covers the sun.)

In the video, only a small semi-circle is visible at first as the sun rises over the horizon.

The circle quickly expands, but before it’s complete the sun suddenly breaks forth from the lower right corner of the circle, filling the screen with light.

A Continental Express flight from Newark to Buffalo crashed into a house about 4 miles from the Buffalo airport on Thursday night, according to a spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board.

The plane carried 48 passengers and crew, said the spokesman, Ted Lopatkiewicz. He said he did not know if there had been any survivors, or any casualties on the ground. The plane went down in light snow, he said.

The Buffalo News, citing a source at the airport there, reported that 49 people — 44 passengers, 4 crew members and 1 on the ground — were killed.

Trooper John Manthey with the New York State Police in Clarence said the plane went down about 10:10 p.m., into a house in the hamlet of Clarence Center, striking a house.

The plane was a Dash 8, a two-engined turboprop, operated by Colgan Airways, as a feeder airline for Continental.

A Safety Board team of investigators will arrive in Buffalo on Friday morning, Mr. Lopatkiewicz said.

No drugs or weapons were found in Anthony’s hotel room early Friday morning. He had other items with him at the hotel, but details weren’t released. Those items are being turned over to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

“We do know George Anthony is saying, ‘I don’t want to live anymore,'” Chitwood said.

Documents made public on Wednesday suggest Casey Anthony once joked about drugging Caylee.

A former boyfriend, Ricardo Morales, told investigators she had made jokes about giving Caylee baby medicine to put her to sleep, according to MyFOXOrlando.com. But he also said she seemed to have a normal relationship with her daughter.

There must be an easier way to get on a ski lift??

VAIL, Colo. —  The guy who ended up dangling upside down from a ski lift with his bare bottom whistling in the wind probably doesn’t want to hear any “ski bum” jokes. Vail Resorts said the 48-year-old man wasn’t injured and was rescued after about seven minutes. His name hasn’t been released.

Resort officials have said only that the man was trying getting on the Blue Ski Basin lift on New Year’s Day. They haven’t said what went wrong.

Resort workers stopped the lift, backed it up about 10 or 12 feet and rescued the man.

Bystanders snapped photos and posted them the Internet, showing a man who looks to be hanging by one ski boot, his ski pants and underwear apparently snagged in the chair and reaching no farther than his knees.

Vail spokeswoman Liz Biebl confirmed the photos on one site were in fact the victim.

“The Travolta family has become like family to us at Old Bahama Bay and we extend our deepest sympathies to them,” said Robert Gidel, president of Ginn Resorts, the property’s owner.

The family had arrived in the Bahamas on Dec. 30, according to police.

Preston has said that Jett became very sick when he was 2 years old and was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease, an illness that leads to inflammation of the blood vessels in young children.

O.J. Simpson gets 15 years

Friday, December 05, 2008
FOX NEWS

Judge said  “The evidence in this case was overwhelming,”

8_68_120508_oj10O.J. Simpson was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison for armed robbery and kidnapping in a failed attempt to recover sports memorabilia from two collectibles peddlers.

There will be the possibility of parole after six years, Judge Jackie Glass said.

His co-defendant Clarence “C.J.” Stewart received the same sentence.

Before the judge handed down his sentence, Simpson apologized to her and the Las Vegas court after learning he won’t be able to be freed on bail if he appeals.

Simpson appeared for his sentencing in a blue prison jumpsuit, shackles and handcuffs.

“I stand before you today sorry,” an emotional Simpson told Glass, fighting back tears. “I am apologetic to the people of Nevada. … When I came here, I came here for a wedding. I didn’t come to reclaim property.”

He said he thought he was taking advantage of an opportunity to retrieve items that were rightfully his.

“In no way did I mean to hurt anybody, to steal anything from anyone,” Simpson said. “I didn’t want anybody else’s stuff. I just wanted my own. I realize that I was stupid. I am sorry. I didn’t know that I was doing anything illegal. I thought I was retrieving property from friends. I’m sorry, I’m sorry for all of it.”

Teen ‘Reincarnation of Buddha’ Draws Crowds

Wednesday, November 12, 2008

To “Budda” or not to “Budda,” that is the question….flagranny2

3_61_111208_buddha1RATANPUR, Nepal —  The teenage boy revered as a reincarnation of Buddha sat silently in the jungle as he blessed his devotees Wednesday with a light tap on the head, which they consider the touch of the divine.

His face was still, his long hair spilled over his white robe, and he never said a word.

The followers of Ram Bahadur Bamjan, 18, believe he has been meditating without food and water since he was first spotted in the jungles of southern Nepal in 2005, when believers say he spent months without moving, sitting with his eyes closed beneath a tree.

Bamjan re-emerged this week to meet his followers, who have come by the thousands to see him in the jungles of Ratanpur, about 100 miles south of Katmandu.

“I got a chance to see God today,” Bishnu Maya Khadka, a housewife, said after receiving Bamjan’s blessing Wednesday. “They say he is Buddha, but for me he is just God.”

Bamjan was expected to address his followers on Nov. 18 and then retreat again into the jungle for meditation, said Kamal Tamang, a Buddhist priest.

Bamjan received the pilgrims from atop a podium covered in yellow cloth and placed before a massive tree. He looked healthy and strong and showed no signs of starvation or dehydration.

Buddhism, which has about 325 million followers, mostly in Asia, teaches that every soul is reincarnated after death in another bodily form.

Some Buddhist priests have been reluctant to accept Bamjan as a true reincarnation of Siddhartha Gautama, who was born in southwestern Nepal roughly 2,500 years ago and became revered as the Buddha, or Enlightened One.

“Meditating without food does not prove that he is the reincarnation of Buddha,” said Min Bahadur Shakya of the Nagarjuna Institute of Exact Methods, a Buddhist research center in Katmandu. “There is much study needed to be done.”

The devotees who have flocked to visit him have fewer doubts. Colorful prayer flags fluttered and incense filled the air Wednesday as the pilgrims silently approached Bamjan, who was surrounded by a line of Buddhist monks.

“I have no doubt in my mind he is a God,” said Meg Bahadur Lama, a local farmer. “He has been meditating without food and water and no human can achieve such a feat. I used to hear about such miracles in the past but now I got to see one.”
