Margaret Truman Daniel, 83, President Harry Truman’s only child, a mystery novelist whose early efforts as a singer famously led her father to threaten an unkind critic with a punch to the nose, died on Tuesday in Chicago after a brief illness, according to a spokesman for the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum.

After living for 41 years on Park Avenue in New York, Mrs. Daniel had made plans last May to move to Chicago. Her son, Clifton Truman Daniel, is director of public relations for Truman College in Chicago. But ill health and a hospitalization in New York delayed those plans. Mrs. Daniel was staying in a care facility in Chicago at the time of her death, the Truman library spokesman said.Mrs. Daniel was born on Feb. 17, 1924, in Independence, Mo. She graduated from George Washington University and pursued a singing career while her father was in office. She performed at Carnegie Hall in 1949.In 1950, a Washington critic panned one of her performances, prompting the president to write a letter on White House stationery that read in part: “Some day I hope to meet you. When that happens you’ll need a new nose, a lot of beefsteak for black eyes, and perhaps a supporter below.”

Mrs. Daniel married Clifton Daniel, the former managing editor of The New York Times, in 1956. He died in 2000.

The author of 23 novels, Mrs. Daniel also wrote nine books of non-fiction that include a biography of her mother, Bess W. Truman. After her father’s death in 1972, she worked as an advocate for presidential libraries.

In addition to her son, she is survived by two other sons, Harrison Gates and Thomas Washington; and five grandchildren.

Another son, William Wallace Daniel, was killed in September 2000 when he was hit by a cab in New York City.

A public memorial is being planned at the Truman Library and Museum in Independence.

Breaking news from Fox News: Cops Link Missing Nevada Student and Earlier Sex Assault

Monday, January 28, 2008 5:12PM est

RENO, Nev. —  Police said Sunday a positive DNA link has been established between the Jan. 20 abduction of a college student from a Reno home and a December sexual assault of another student who lived a few blocks away.At a late afternoon news conference, Reno police commander Ron Holladay said investigators think the same unidentified white male in his 30s is responsible for the earlier assault and last week’s kidnapping of Brianna Denison, 19, from a friend’s house near the University of Nevada, Reno campus.“Our chances of capturing the suspect are exponentially increased now because of the DNA,” Holladay said. “He probably lives in the area. It’s still my hope that Brianna is alive, and we’re expending every resource possible to get her back safely.”Holladay said the match between DNA samples obtained from the scenes of Denison’s disappearance and the earlier assault allowed investigators to make a major breakthrough in the case.

He said the victim of the earlier case was interviewed again after the match was made and a more detailed description of the suspect was developed.

That victim, a UNR student, was kidnapped outside her home on Dec. 16 and sexually assaulted. She also was the victim of a Jan. 19 attempted burglary at her home that may be connected to the same suspect, Holladay said.

“This is a sad and difficult time for the family,” Seeley said in the statement, published by The Associated Press.

“This is a sad and difficult time for the family,” Seeley said.

Born on May 11, 1958, Brando was a high school dropout and never had much of a career. He had small roles in a handful of movies, including 1968’s “I Love You, Alice B. Toklas!” but he was better known for his brushes with the law.

He spent five years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in 1990 for killing his sister’s boyfriend, Dag Drollet, at the Brando family’s hilltop estate.

Brando said he accidentally shot Drollet as they struggled for a gun during an argument over whether Drollet, 26, had beaten Brando’s pregnant half-sister, Cheyenne.

Cheyenne, who later gave birth to Drollet’s son but lost custody of the child, committed suicide in 1995. She was 25. Family associates said she had been distraught since her boyfriend’s death.

UPDATE: Death of Heath Ledger

Friday, January 25, 2008

The headline reads: Private Viewing of Heath Ledger’s Body Set for Friday; Mary-Kate Olsen Report Deniedhowever the article corrects  a couple of initial statements thought to be true.

Untruths:
1 – A NYPD spokesman told Foxnews.com the report regarding frantic phone calls Olsen received from  the masseuse, Diana Wolozin, is as he stated “The report is unfounded and untrue.”  The police did say the masseuse spent 9 minutes making 3 calls to MKO before dialing 911 and again after the paramedics arrived.

2 – The police also stated earlier on Fox News that there were prescription drugs found but they were not strewn around as originally reported.

“As far as I’m concerned the masseuse left her brain, if she even had one, some place else as why in the world would anyone in their right mind not call 911 immediately.  First she knocked on his door then tried to call his cell phone and still after no answer she sets up her massage table and tried to wake Ledger and that’s when she realized something was wrong.  That’s when she called MKO asking her what to do, HELLO!!, with Olsen in California what did she think she could do so it wasn’t until 9 minutes later that Wolozin dialed 911….flagranny2”

According to what the police can find Wolozin was no registered as a licensed therapist in New York as they are all required to be CPR qualified and the 911 operator had to instruct Wolozin CPR procedure.

Best know for the movie ‘Brokeback Mountain’

NEW YORK —  Actor Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence in what authorities say is a possible drug-related death, the NYPD said. He was 28.

NYPD spokeswoman Stephanie Jaramillo told FOXNews.com that Ledger was discovered by his housekeeper at his apartment on Broome Street in the Soho section of New York City and was pronounced dead at 3:35 p.m. EST.

Jaramillo declined to comment on the cause of death, saying only that “the investigation is still ongoing.”

But The New York Post reported that Ledger died of a possible drug overdose and his apartment was strewn with pills.  They do say he drugs are prescription drugs.

Ledger had an appointment for a massage at his Manhattan apartment, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne told The Associated Press. The housekeeper went to let Ledger know the masseuse had arrived and found him dead, according to Browne.

Want Fries With That Arrest? Granny Nabbed at McDonald’s Drive-Thru After Confrontation

Monday, January 21, 2008

I would ask that anyone who does read this story to please read the comment.  The comment puts light on how and what really happened as told by the mother whose daughter was working at the time this occurred.

This is a real example of how the media reports stories how they see it and not really what happened.

A 75-year-old grandmother of eight was arrested at a Florida McDonald’s drive-thru after police said she wouldn’t pull her car forward.

Jean Merola was waiting for her coffee and fries when a police officer asked her to move her car. Merola refused, saying she was told to wait there by McDonald’s employees, MyFoxTampaBay reported.

Merola was charged with disorderly conduct and hauled off to Pinellas County Jail, where Merola claims she was searched, photographed and fingerprinted.

Jail records show she was released about 90 minutes later on her own recognizance.

Article Source-NapervilleSun:suburbanchicagonews

JOLIET — On Valentine’s Day, a Will County judge could consider a request for visitation with Lisa Stebic’s children. The missing mom’s parents and grandparents, Lawrence and Judith Ruttenberg and Milton and Charlotte Ruttenberg, say Lisa’s husband, Craig Stebic, has prohibited them from contacting his and Lisa’s two children.

Stebic’s attorney Dion Davi said Stebic has offered visits with his kids, ages 11 and 12, to the Ruttenberg family but got no response.

In November, the Ruttenbergs filed a petition in Will County Circuit Court seeking visitation rights. The lawyers involved met Monday, but no visitation decisions were made. A Feb. 14 date was set to meet again.

State gives rights
Illinois law states that a grandparent, great-grandparent or adult sibling of a minor child can file a petition for visitation rights if visitation has been unreasonably denied by a parent, and if the other parent has been missing for at least three months.[Full story]
